Matt
Wolfe began writing songs in secret during art school. At night he would sneak
into an unused auditorium, stack a borrowed four track on an old office chair
and wheel it to different corners of the room in search of the best sound.
At the time he paid his rent by loading
trucks for touring rock bands. This work allowed him to see the road culture of
the major acts on their way through Boston. Life backstage was a great education.
Matt witnessed the circus machinery first hand and knew the stage was the life
for him.
Matt moved from city to city, eventually
settling in Brooklyn. There his mania for music struggled with mundanities of
providing himself with room and board. He spent all of his free time writing at
the bars, and sitting in with Irish session players whenever they let him. Matt
dared his first open mike in Williamsburg and was bitten again by a life in music.
Summer
in Fort Greene brought love and theft. One night, while walking home from a cab,
some local criminals availed themselves of that evening's slave wage. They pointed
guns at his lover. Matt had enough and escaped with her to Vancouver.
In
Vancouver, and later Toronto, Matt wrote the songs that would comprise his debut.
Racetracker was recorded on a borrowed computer with a friend sitting in on bass.
The music was marked by a unique lyrical strength and an innovative approach to
the guitar. Unsatisfied with the initial effort, Matt re-engineered the vocals
and guitar tracks. These results can be heard on the music page.
In Toronto, Matt played every open mike
and released Racetracker to audiences at two successful showcase events organized
by Busterhouse Productions Inc., the production company he started with his fiancé.
He earned his keep playing in bar bands and featuring at clubs all over Toronto.
In
May of 2003, Matt will be in laying down tracks for his second musical effort,
entitled The Mercy Circle. In late summer 2003, Busterhouse will produce the first
music video from Matt Wolfe. In the fall of 2003, Busterhouse will begin shooting
a feature length film written by Matt and his partner. In September he will publish
his first book of poetry.
